We need supplies for our school club, Flight School. These supplies include components to build and fly drone quadcopters, frame, motor, blades, rechargeable batteries and a battery charger.
Two students at our school took the initiative to start this project. Their names are Quincey and Saul. Together they have turned a hobby into a serious area of study. They have started this club they call Flight School where they teach fellow students about how to fly drones.
Our start-up coordinator donated one drone to our school. These students began playing with it and convinced us to spend some money on a more expensive drone to help kick start our robotics club. This has morphed into a club focused mostly on flight and flying machines. Through this club students are learning about physics, math, technology, career exploration, engineering, climate, and geography.
Through the exploration of flying machines, such as remote controlled drones and radio controlled air craft, students learn about climate, geography, and physics as they try to make them fly. Students also learn engineering, robotics, and technology skills as they build, repair, and modify custom built flying machines. Students also explore careers in aerospace and engineering through independent research project, guest speakers, job shadow opportunities, and internships. Students learn both teamwork and leadership through involvement in this club as they work together to support one another in their learning. Through peer teaching and self-organization students learn leadership skills that will transfer to other learning and work settings.
In Their Own Words
One goal for our flight school is to create a time of our day where students can engage in an activity that is therapeutic. Learning to fly radio controlled air craft can be very relaxing. Another goal is to learn about how flight works. This project also gives students leadership opportunities at school as we help each other learn.
It was my idea to put together this flight school. I made a sign-up list and asked my teacher for help in getting supplies. I have been teaching my classmates how to fly drones. I hope to learn more and share that information too.
I think this is a very good hobby. It is a healthy activity that involves a lot of academic learning. It also helps our school by bringing students together around something we all love to do. Our school is new and we don't have many extra curricular activities. This kind of activity makes us unique.
