Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Currently students have some resistance training, conditioning & cardiovascular training in the gymnasium & classroom during their scheduled class time. Other students feel exercise is sports in the gymnasium or park. A school fitness center will expose students to another aspect of physical education
Help our middle school make fitness a lifelong habit!
Our very first middle school fitness center needs equipment to make exercise and fitness a lifelong custom! Our young middle school students have endured in life what most adults have yet to experience but they still have the courage to continue on. Battling an environment plagued by poverty, drug, and gang violence, our school strives to provide these students with hope and inspire them to succeed. These young brilliant minds have become shackled to the ideologies of poverty. Teachers at our school have dedicated our lives to liberate them so they can be free. A school fitness center will expose our students to another aspect of health/physical education that will have a lifelong lasting effect.
My Project
A fitness center will educate our students on a variety of exercises and fitness programs outside of the school gymnasium & classroom. The fitness center will provide a combination of core, cardiovascular, flexibility, balance and strength training. The students will learn how to use medicine, balance and stability balls to work on their balance and strengthen their core. The treadmill, stationary bike, elliptical & row machine provide different options and levels of cardio activity. Cardio is the foundation of most fitness training programs and the better our aerobic fitness is the more efficiently our heart, lungs and blood vessels will work. The students will also learn how to use a pull up/dip bar, and resistance bands for strength training. Strength training just twice a week can help our students increase bone strength/muscular fitness and maintain muscle mass during a weight-loss program. A fitness center will help combat our high obesity rate which is one of the nation’s highest.
With resources donated, our students will be able to gain an experience of what it is like having a membership to a gym such as Planet Fitness or New York Sports Club.
Most working adults are limited to exercising weekends, before and after work. We will mimic this by providing access to the fitness center on Saturdays, before/after school and during their lunch periods. This hopefully will build a lifelong habit of exercise and a culture that emphasizes pride in physical education and fitness.
