First Time at First Grade

My students need a variety of reading and math materials, such as books, pocket charts and a digital camera, to help them become successful students in our new first grade classroom.

My Students

Our class is ready to learn but needs more materials in our first grade classroom. I taught kindergarten for over 12 years and decided to move on to first grade. Our classroom needs more age appropriate books, teaching resources and other materials. We would love your help!

My school is a Title One urban school in California.

Many of the students receive free or reduced lunches and many are English learners. Despite these factors, all of the students in my classroom are excited and ready to learn. They are especially interested in reading and put lots of effort into decoding words, reading new stories and comprehending the plot of stories. Their parents try to help them at home but many parents work at night or are unable to speak English. In my classroom one third of the students were also in my kindergarten classroom last year. It's been great to see them grow from non-reading, non-writing, wiggly 5 year olds to avid readers and prolific writers. (They still are somewhat wiggly, however!)

My Project

My class LOVES Mo Willems books! Even the beginning readers who struggle in reading practically knock each other over to get these books during silent reading time! I've been borrowing these books from the public library to keep up with my students' requests for this series of books. Junie B. books would be great for the readers in my class who are ready to move on to chapter books. The books on cassette and Take It to Your Seat Literacy will be used during centers time where my students work on different activities. I'm excited about the Word Family House Pocket Chart Kit, the Focus on Reading Chart, and the Number Line Math Activity Chart. These are great teaching tools to help my first graders better understand the subject matter taught. They are easily viewed, hands-on kits that will make learning accessible to all of my students. With the camera, I would be able to develop class digital projects, document the learning in my classroom, and create an end of the year slideshow.

It's my first year teaching first grade and I want my class to have a fabulous year! We need these supplies in order to maximize their learning. I want my students to enjoy school, to learn as much as they can this year and continue making progress in the years to come. I hope to create that strong foundation with your help!
