Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Never Judge a Book by its Cover" is a common expression that serves as a reminder that we shouldn't judge a person based on the first impression. My first graders need to understand that teasing is another form of bullying. They need to stay away from bullies and be kind to others.
Bullying in schools has been going on for years and only now is gaining national attention, especially after recent events.
It has become an urgent issue. Preventing bullying in schools needs to begin with character education being taught in early childhood. My first graders are eager to learn, but at the same time they lack a lot of resources. Sometimes they live in crowded households shared with more than one family. A lot of them have loving parents who struggle to provide for their basic needs working extended hours, so kids do not get the support and care they need. Our school is a Title I school in a high poverty neighborhood. All the students at the school receive free lunch and also qualify for free after-school programs. Most of my students are learning English as a second language. They need to develop social and language skills and to respond to a bullying situation in a non-violent manner. They need to be able to identify when they are being bullied and inform an adult.
My Project
With the use of the book "Bullying in Schools" by Townsend Press and some other anti-bullying literature my students will get a better understanding of what bullying is, how to react in a non-violent way to a bullying situation, how to stay away from bullies and will have clear that bullying is not acceptable, period. We will also explore the topic of friendship and appreciation for others beyond the first impression and will have a better understanding that with our actions we may hurt others. We will explore creative writing as we use prompts and other resources. As we brainstorm in some of our writing activities, students will acquire collaboration skills and apply teamwork. By using daily warm-ups and reading-writing resources students will improve reading comprehension as they will have to reconstruct the stories they read and write about them. Students are encouraged to keep a journal at home and with the use of these resources writing will become natural.
With your support my students will be able to recognize bullying and will be able to avoid any bullying situation in the playground and in their neighborhood.
They will learn the importance of friendship, respect for others, collaboration and teamwork and they will explore different resources for creative writing. Please help my current and future students to acquire these important skills.
