Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As we grieve as a nation, we try to cope and find answers for the senseless loss of children and educators in Newtown, CT. One thing that stands out is the importance of social skills, collaboration, and safety. My students need to understand the importance of friendship and respect for others.
Bullying in schools has been going on for years and only now is gaining national attention, especially after recent events.
It has become an urgent issue. Preventing bullying in schools needs to begin with character education being taught in early childhood. My first graders are eager to learn, but at the same time, they lack a lot of resources. Sometimes they live in crowded households shared with more than one family. A lot of them have loving parents who struggle to provide for their basic needs working extended hours, so kids do not get the support and care they need. Our school is a Title I school in a high poverty neighborhood. All the students at the school receive free lunch and also qualify for free after-school programs. Most of my students are learning English as a second language. They need to develop social and language skills and respond to a bullying situation in a non-violent manner. They need to be able to identify when they are being bullied and inform an adult.
My Project
With the use of the book Bullying in Schools by Townsend Press, some other anti-bullying literature, and materials to motivate them to write, I expect to teach my students respect for themselves and for others, as well as the importance of collaboration and friendship in our classroom, in the playground, and outside the school. They will also learn the importance of safety in the playground and at home. Some of the writing assignments will include brainstorming and collaboration to build a compelling story. Students are encouraged to write about the importance of friendship and collaboration. We will use writing prompts for creative writing.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" tells us that the longest and most difficult ventures have a starting point. That starting point is developing social skills in early childhood. With this project, my students will understand that they are diverse and unique and what makes people special in their very own way.
With your support, my students will acquire writing skills as they explore the topics of bullying, safety, and appreciation for others.
They will learn how to react to a bullying situation in the playground or in their neighborhood, to stay away from bullies, the importance of friendship, collaboration, and respect for others. Students are encouraged to keep a journal at home so writing will become natural as they work on daily warm ups. Please help my current and future students in their quest.
