First Graders In The Quest To Explore Math And Science
My students need Math and Science literature to get started with STEM, experience the joy of reading, acquire an appreciation for our planet and think as global citizens.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Self-driving cars, unmanned manufacturing equipment, robotic arms, remotely operated devices, instant communications across the globe and even with planets as distant as Mars. Perhaps those things at one time were fiction but now they are the realities children are seeing today.
My students live in a technological world each time more demanding and have to grasp concepts that prepare them to respond accordingly.
I teach 24 eager first graders, in a Title I school. Most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them are learning English as a second language and live in a high poverty area. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, my students are extremely motivated to learn and have curiosity to explore science as they develop their reading skills.
My Project
Public interest in science is high and increasing science literacy is a pre-condition for progress in the 21st century. First grade is a good place to start. Last month we followed closely the arrival of an old friend "The Endeavor" as we were honored by NASA to serve as its home. My students were moved and proud and some of them had the fortune to visit it in its final destination. Just recently we also learned about Hurricane Sandy and the devastation it created, and we stressed in the importance of precaution, controlling global warming, emergency preparedness and humanitarian aid. My students are starting to learn how important is to take care of the planet, cooperate with others, and their role as global citizens.
My first graders also love to learn about animals, plants, our solar system and this will be a great opportunity to hone their reading skills. As they explore the world around them, they will acquire scientific concepts, and draw conclusions based on their observations.
My first grade scientists will really benefit from having a book collection to practice their reading while they explore two fields they enjoy: Science and Math.
This will also give them topics to discuss at home and at school and will serve in our writing assignments. Please help my current and future students get started with STEM.
