Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a first grade teacher my goal is to have all of my students reading on grade level by the end of the year. The greatest challenge I have is providing my students with quality books that are at an appropriate reading level.
I have a very diverse class.
Our school is one of three K-2 primary schools in the district. There are 5 first grade teachers at the school and we all plan to use these books in our classrooms. The students are all wonderful and very sweet children who have a variety of needs. Some of my students have parents who speak very little English and about half of my class qualifies for free/reduced breakfast and lunch. These students often struggle to meet the grade level expectations because they do not have the resources at home to support their learning. I am trying to provide as many resources as I can to help these students.
My Project
The resources that I am requesting are books that are developmentally appropriate for my students. I would like to offer my students a variety of fiction and nonfiction stories that are both engaging and foster strong literacy skills. I specifically chose Pioneer Valley Books for my students because these books include important first grade vocabulary words as well as appropriate story elements and picture cues. I will use these books during my guided reading period. I plan to read these books in small groups with my students. I will introduce new reading strategies, vocabulary and improve their comprehensions skills. I will also allow students to bring these books home on a daily basis to read with a parent.
These books will help enhance the reading curriculum as well as give my students resources that they otherwise would not have.
It will allow the teachers in first grade to individualize their reading instruction to meet the needs of each student.
