My students need to find the inner reader in themselves. By having high interest nonfiction books, they will be able to explore topics out of their comfort zone!
If you walked into my classroom, you would immediately sense the love of reading from my students. What has brought about this love? Exposure to high quality fiction texts. But in order to further grow the inner reader in my classroom, I need high interest nonfiction texts as well.
My students are a very personable bunch who love to talk, laugh, and learn.
They have transformed over the year into wonderful students. I have many different levels of readers in the class that all come from various backgrounds. Our school is a Title 1 school in a rural North Carolina town.
My Project
My number one goal as a teacher is to create life long learners! The best way to achieve this goal is by getting students interested in books at an early age. Unfortunately I don't have many nonfiction books for my classroom library. I feel like this is hindering my students from exploring the wonderful world of nonfiction. I will use the books during our reading workshop time for independent reading. Many of the books I have chosen are about historical events or scientific concepts. I believe this will build background knowledge and help them later in life when they will have to read an abundant amount of nonfiction.
