My Students

Early elementary children love to use their imaginations. If the imagination is linked to the intelligence, children will see the joy of learning, their natural curiosity about the world around them will be built upon, and they will become lifelong learners.

I teach in a public Montessori school in an urban setting.

My students are bussed in from all over the city, meaning we have a wide mix of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. I have 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade children in about equal numbers. We work together to create a learning environment that feels like a family, with older children acting as guides and mentors for the younger ones. Children stay with me for all three grades, so they get a chance to grow and learn together, become leaders, then move on to new challenges in the 4th - 6th grade classes.

My Project

While many of our students do not have the opportunity to travel far from home, their curiosity can be met in the classroom by sparking their imaginations with high quality geography materials and in depth group discussions. I will make activity cards for each book, covering grammar (find 3 verbs on page 6), phonics (list all the long 'e' words you can find in this book), comprehension, and writing. Studying geography, students will also be improving their reading and language arts skills, while becoming independent learners and appreciating the similarities and differences of worldwide cultures.

Our classroom needs a globe, an atlas and sets of books about geography and world cultures to help students learn about the beauty and diversity of the Earth, its features and its inhabitants.
