Fill Our Hands with Technology to Explore the World
My students need 2 iPads to continue to improve literacy and Math skills. These are crucial for my reluctant learners; they add an element of engagement and independence. We also need the protection plan.
Remember when you could watch a video, play a learning game on a computer, or listen to a book on tape? Were those things as motivating to you as they were to me. My students want to learn, but some of them need a creative way to deliver and practice skills.
My school is a beautiful, almost 100 year old neighborhood school.
My students are beautiful children who have experienced loss, homelessness, poverty and strife. Yet, they are resilient. Many of my 16 students come from homes where English is not their first language. Emerson is a caring community that includes all children. They learn to be accepting and tolerant of others, though they struggle with basic needs being met at home. My students love to learn, sing, read and play games. My job is to make them college and career ready. With your help, I can make a bigger impact.
My Project
Currently, my students are using my personal iPad to practice skills. We use it for things like sight word identification, spelling, sentence building and math practice. The ease of the iPad makes it accessible to all who can quickly get set with a program and spend time learning. We also use the iPad daily to take photos, look up information, show pictures of things so students can clarify meaning of ideas. This tool has been so engaging for a few of my special students who are really struggling. It has allowed them to be independent for a short while. My students will use free apps that our school website provides for all subjects as well as some free apps that I have downloaded. If I receive the iPads, I will be asking my PTO for a mini grant to support headphones, cases and the cost of applications. With only one iPad in the classroom, I have already seen success and improvement. Imagine the possibilities and number of students I could reach with two additional iPads.
If we could receive 2 more iPads in the classroom, that means that many more minutes could be spent practicing math facts, listening to books for fluency and learning English, as well as researching interests.
These iPads would also give our students an equal chance to become tech savvy; they deserve this chance. The impact will be substantial to 16 students. Please consider my request to help the kids at Emerson.
