My Students

Feed young minds! Moretown is a rural Vermont community, yet many of our students are disconnected from growing and eating local foods. We have partnered with local composters, gardeners,& chefs to create a program that gets hands dirty by planting a school garden & preparing healthy foods.

The students in my school are resilient survivors.

Our school & grounds were flooded in August 2011 from Tropical Storm Irene. School was delayed during the massive clean-up of our entire village. We started the school year teaching under tents and as teachers, were sustained by our students' strong sense of community and engagement. We want to celebrate our roots by nourishing our soil, planting gardens and learning how to eat well. When two of our students approached our school principal about starting a cooking club, a local natural foods chef stepped up and has volunteered to teach students how to eat healthy. We are invested in Project-based learning to connect our kids to meaningful learning through gardening & cooking. In addition, we've begun a school-wide composting initiative, in the goal of creating a sustainable loop from food to soil to garden. We need to enhance our school library collection with cookbooks and gardening books to help support these new initiatives.

My Project

Having a collection in our school library of new cookbooks and gardening books will allow students to learn more about cooking and gardening, but maybe more importantly, take this new-found passion home and share their knowledge and enthusiasm with their families. If we can change how our students feel about eating healthy foods and gardening, they might pass that along to their families. The aprons would help in our kitchen, where students are learning how to prepare healthy meals using ingredients that they have grown. They would personalize their aprons and use them during their tenure at Moretown School. Who knows ... the next Iron Chef might be waiting to develop here at our school!

This project will make a difference because our library collection is used to support our students' lifelong learning and growth.

Our hope is that students who learn about gardening & eating well will check out these new books and share what they know with their families and neighbors. This project will support reluctant readers by connecting their passions with books they want to read. We hope to create pride in our budding student gardeners/chefs as they design and use personalized aprons.
