My students need kitchen essentials such as vegetable peelers, kitchen shears, sink strainers, and storage containers for our flour, sugar, and other staples.
My Family and Consumer Sciences students will learn about "real life" as we explore the following units of study:
*fashion and interior design
*leadership and careers
*food, nutrition, and wellness
*consumer and finance
*early childhood development
My students are in grades 6, 7, and 8.
Many of them go home alone or watch younger siblings after school. Therefore, it is very important to teach them about kitchen safety, healthy eating choices, and how to care for themselves and younger children.
My Project
My students are excited about learning and these materials will allow us to conduct our food labs safely. Kitchen shears allow us to cut foods safely without using a knife. The peelers allow us to safely peel fruits and vegetables. The boil over safeguard prevents a stove disaster. The sink strainers will prevent blocked pipes. The Tupperware storage containers will allow us to safely store our kitchen staples such as flour and sugar.
The best way to teach my students is by example.
If I practice kitchen safety while teaching my students how to prepare meals, then they are more likely to be safe in the kitchen. If I store food properly, then they are more likely to store foods properly at home. This project will help me to teach by example and it will prevent injuries and food contamination at school and at home.
