When students are involved in making decisions about their learning through goal setting and strategy mastery, they gain a sense of autonomy and the results are unbelievable.
My students are nineteen amazing six- and seven-year-old children that I am absolutely blessed by each and every day.
We are in a extremely low socioeconomic environment, so not all of my students have the things and luxuries that others have. They do not all have computers at home, nor do they all have hands-on learning materials they need to help them excel. I firmly believe that it is vital to create and foster a strong and loving classroom environment. For that reason, I set my room up with a homey feel. My goal was to create a learning environment they felt comfortable in so that they would want to be there. In my class, the set up is student centered, so I do not have a traditional teacher desk. I would rather utilize the limited space we have for the students. Each of my amazing, twenty-two, first graders has his and/her own unique personality. We are not just a class, we are Ms. Davis' Hoppin' Good First Grade Family, and we are winners in every way!
My Project
Each Friday afternoon, we do our Fun Friday Stations to reinforce the skills that our being taught with hands-on and cooperative learning. The Fun Friday Stations consist of stations such as an Osmo Station, iPad Station, Cash Register Station, and Magna-Tile Station. We are in need of several hands-on manipulatives and games for our stations. The Osmo Numbers Games will be utilized at the Osmo Station. The Pop & Add Games will be utilized at a Math Games Station. The sets of Let's Go Shopping Food Baskets will be incorporated into our Cash Register Station. All requested materials will optimize their learning during Fun Friday Stations and maximize their math skill development and understanding.
Donations to our project will help us be able to get the vital hands-on manipulatives and station supplies that we need for our Fun Friday Stations to succeed.
We love learning and our favorite time of day is during Stations, when we can work on our station work, work with Ms. Davis in small groups, and let our imaginations soar; the possibilities are endless!
