My students need a class set of ActivExpression V2, a student response clicker device, to assess comprehension and learning outcomes before, during, and after lessons.
I am a 5th grade English Language Arts teacher. Our day is spent reading and analyzing literature as well as informational text. We continuously look for text based evidence to support our thinking as we discuss a piece of text. The ultimate goal is to have students reading on level.
I teach at a small community school.
Education is extremely important to the community and this reflects upon the atmosphere in the community. There are four classes of 5th graders, each class has 25 students. During class time, these students work hard to understand new and old concepts. They do what is asked of them without complaining. At home, parents are supportive and want to understand the skills so that they can help their children as much as possible. It is not a wealthy community and both the school and school district are resourceful with the tools they use in the classroom. Despite some lack of technology in the school, students score well on standardize testing and continue to be life long learners once they leave the educational environment.
My Project
As an ELA teacher, there are often many questions that arise during readings to assess students comprehension, which is one of the number one struggles in reading. With ActivExpression students can type their response so that the teacher can read what they are thinking in real-time. These responses can be confidential and do not always have to be shared with the class. When they are shared with the class it can lead to student led teaching to explain details, so that everyone starts to understand concepts. With Compass Evaluations, students must fill out an Exit ticket of something learned during the day before leaving the classroom. This process uses a lot of index cards and post-it notes. Having students accomplish this digitally is resourceful. ActivExpression student response system is engaging for all students, and because it is similar to texting, sentences can be typed instead of multiple choice responses.
Donations to this project will help to get full class participation, engage learners, open communication to student led discussion, provide continuous progress monitoring for the teacher, and is resourceful by saving time, paper, and money.
It can also improve writing, typing, response, and comprehension skills that will be helpful in the working world.
