My students need an educational, comfortable carpet on which to sit while they work on independent spelling, vocabulary, and reading comprehension activities.
My students need to move to various areas in the classroom to develop work and social skills. At the end of fifth grade, we expect our students to be proficient in academics as well as demonstrate responsible social behavior in all situations.
My classroom is made up of 5th graders, many of whom have severe learning disabilities.
They need lots of hands on help and extra time to learn and master new skills. It helps to have comfortable locations for them to sit besides their desks to receive instruction as well as work on developing skills and applying strategies. My students are active, eager, and enthusiastic. They all live in a high poverty area. Several of them are in foster care or homeless shelters. They have few extras. My school is full of students who are struggling against many obstacles, yet so many show great strength and perseverance. I want them to have as many advantages that I can get them.
My Project
I am requesting a map of the world carpet as well as grammar, spelling and reading comprehension resources students can use while seated in this area. These activities will allow students the chance to independently and in groups, apply strategies learned to reading passages. Students can work at their own pace on materials individually selected by teachers. The carpet will also serve as a bright, comfortable meeting area for whole class lessons and activities.
Donations to this project will help create a bright, inviting meeting and work area for the whole class.
The English Language Arts materials will provide additional practice for skills that require mastery with today's Common Core. These materials will change my students lives by providing them with additional opportunities to develop stronger educational as well as social emotional skills.
