Ms. Mersand from Yorktown Heights NY is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Exploring Physical Computing

My students need supplies for our 3D printer, and new items for our makerspace. The RaspberryPi and Arduino kits will help us get started with physical computing.

My Students

The YHS Library is designed to encourage collaboration, creativity, and innovation among our students. The maker movement is the belief that if you match students, problems, and materials, the results are astounding - achieving gains in problem solving, creativity and innovation skills.

Yorktown High School has a vibrant community of students who are immersed in academics, music, sports and extracurricular activities, but they have fewer opportunities to participate in problem solving and innovation.

The library is the perfect place to help student develop and maintain a sense of curiosity, wonder, creativity, and innovation.

My Project

Students in the YHS library are just beginning to explore tinkering and making as a doorway to innovation and creativity. Our hope is to have a fully stocked MakerSpace sometime in the next year, so that students can tinker and explore with any number of items. Utilizing the RaspberryPi and Arduino Kits, students will be able to explore physical computing. They will learn about the basic workings of computers, and will need to problem solve, to ensure that the computer will be successful. Students may create solutions for identified problems, or come in with problems of their own to solve.

Creating a MakerSpace in the YHS Library will allow us to create opportunities for collaboration, creativity, problem solving, and 21st Century Skills.

By creating new opportunities for students, we hope to spark an interest in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math by utilizing a problem based learning model, and embracing the constructionism theory of learning.
