Our innovative public charter K-8 school is a learning community that engages students in a rigorous, relevant, relationship-based education. This is done through experiential, project-based learning that empowers students to build a connected, just, and sustainable world.
The vision of our school is that students will be a catalyst for solving present and future problems across the street and around the world.
Our school is a wonderful place to learn, teach, and volunteer. In the past year our school earned both the U.S. Department of Education's Green Ribbon designation and North Carolina's STEM School designation.
In September 2014, our school is doubling in size. We are expanding from grades 6-8 to grades K-8. Our expansion has resulted in a new community-based learning program called Explorations. Each week 100% of our K-5 students will participate in a two hour community- led Explorations class. Students will rotate through new classes each six weeks.
My Project
Each week community volunteers will lead students through a two-hour Explorations class. The learning opportunities are dependent on the community volunteers that we recruit and will change throughout the year. For example, we have community members committed to teaching improv, robotics, sewing, French, German, handbells, financial literacy, as well as students serving off-site at our local urban farm and partnering with local museums.
As we build this new program our goal is to get students out in the community while exploring new ideas.
Our DonorsChoose funds are being applied towards the start-up of the Explorations program. Each of the twenty weekly Explorations classes needs one backpack and storage bin. These resources will be used by 100% of our K-5 students. The resources purchased with our DonorsChoose funds will be able to be used year after year.
Funding this DonorsChoose request will touch over 200 students per year.
Each student participates in the Explorations program on weekly basis.
Students will be out in the community while exploring new ideas.
