My students need genuinely interesting books on animals and plants, ecology, and history. These include Trying to Love Spiders, How Kids Lived (Egypt) and Water is Water.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
“So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky.”
-Wm. James, Philosopher
At Roosevelt our goal is to create lifelong readers that enjoy reading for recreation as well as for seeking information.
Our entire staff places a high priority on reading throughout all grade levels. We are a Transitional Kinder through 8th Grade Title 1 school. 50% of our students are English language learners and 80% are economically disadvantaged. Among our students, we have some enthusiastic readers, and we also have many reluctant readers who are reading well below their grade level. Many of our students are unlikely to have access to books in their homes so is it critical to have a substantial collection of appropriate-level reading material in their school library. These books need to cover all reading levels so that they can be enticed not only to what they want to read but CAN read. This means not just getting 1 book about a topic, but several on that topic at different reading levels so that all students can be successful in finding what they want and can read.
My Project
When I hear "Miss P, I can't find anything (to read)," my mission is clear: Whether they are avid readers in search of their next enchanting book journey, or reluctant readers awaiting that first spark; I must offer students intriguing reading materials, and match the reader to the book.
We are a Project Based Learning (PBL) School and we have implemented the Accelerated Reading (AR) Program in our 2nd-8th grades (and K/1 that reads to level 10 or above). These programs have been very successful in creating excitement, and students' performance continues to rise. This success, plus a growing student population (from 450 to 650 in 4 years) combined with zero budget for library books, creates a challenge to keep current, plentiful books available to students.
We have great expectations for our students. We ask them to embrace STEM subjects, to participate in PBL and transition to Common Core Curriculum while increasing their reading proficiency.
I am asking for 22 new books for all grade levels - primarily non-fiction, science and history - to add to our library.
When students use the library for their PBL research, or as they simply seek books to read to reach their AR goal, they will find this exciting new material.
