My Students

Encouraging and inspiring young writers to write involves many different steps. One of these steps is to give easy access to a variety of writing materials and tools. Currently, our writing materials are messy and sometimes difficult to access.

My classroom is filled with kindergarten and first grade students who come from a variety of different countries and speak a variety of different languages.

As they share experiences with their families and friends, they love to write these stories and create published books. Throughout the school year, my students learn to write fiction and non-fiction stories as well as poetry. They enjoy learning about new authors and finding ways to incorporate those writing styles into their own stories.

My Project

Our current method of organization involves two small shelves which are often blocked by other classroom materials due to a lack of space. This causes a crowd of students clamoring for materials, which can result in lost projects or damaged stories. By adding these materials to our classroom, students would be able to easily access writing tools and supplies independently. The corner shelf would store the students' writing binders and the writer's workshop station would hold supplies like paper, writing booklets, pencils and markers. These items would be placed on our long counter so students could access them easily and there would be no other materials blocking their ability to reach supplies.

I strive to create an organized classroom that makes supplies and materials easily accessible to my students.

This allows them to focus on the task of learning instead of struggling with how to get materials. The addition of these shelves and organizers will help create an organized system for obtaining materials and allow students to focus on the craft of writing.
