Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When did you begin learning about your emotions and expressing them? My classroom is a full-day preschool with 20 busy, four year-olds who are curious about life and learning about themselves, including their own emotions and how to share them.
My school is a Title 1 school within Chicago Public Schools.
Over 84% of the school's population qualify as low-income. My classroom is globally diverse. Last year, there were 9 different home languages spoken just within our classroom, so I have many English Language Learners. All of my students are eager to learn and I work closely with all of my families to provide differentiated support for them. By the end of the year, I want my children to be equipped with the kindergarten readiness skills, confidence, the ability to be able to express themselves, and a love of learning.
My Project
My students need 32 books and 2 manipulatives to learn about the range of emotions we all have and how cope with them throughout our daily lives: When I Miss You, Be Polite and Kind, and I Can Do It! Social-emotional development is such a vital component at this stage of a child’s life. Children learn so much through books. I want to use literacy to teach (in large and small groups) my students how to verbally express themselves, establish a bank of positive strategies for conflict resolution, and develop self-regulation skills. Plus, when an individual student is struggling with a specific situation, whether it stems from home or school, I will be able provide differentiated support through literacy. I want to empower them with a strong social-emotional foundation to build upon throughout their lifetime.
This donation will give my assistant and I the resources we need within the classroom to support our student’s social and emotional development throughout the year.
These materials will change the lives of my student's, because they will be able learn how to communicate with others in a positive and healthy manner in a variety of different situations.
