Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As my music cart rolls into a First grade classroom, the students call to the teacher: "She's here! She's here!" My students are always excited about the music they will sing, move to, and hear each week. The music my students gleefully bring to life is rich with history and human experience.

Our students enjoy every music experience they receive, as a new and exciting adventure, because it is!

My school is a K-6 Title I school of approximately 500 students, who participate in general music, recorder, band and chorus classes weekly. Resources are limited at home and at school. Many students have not experienced the traditional songs, games and activities that accompany the childhood experience. Students approach their music classes with enthusiasm and a sense of wonder, because it is all new and exciting to them. Because there is no music room, music instruction travels to each classroom, and the sound of music is heard everywhere in the building. Their songs, games, and dances can be heard in the rooms, hallways, and stairwells of our school. The joyful sound of music making energizes students, and creates a positive atmosphere in the building. Other teachers, volunteers, and staff pop into the classroom with a smile, complimenting us on how nice our music making sounds.

My Project

Children's folk songs, games, and stories build a bridge from past to present. Because of their high quality value, they are the "colorful vegetables" of my students' musical diet. These requested books will fill a shelf in our library that has always been empty, and fill a void in the musical and cultural lives of these children. My students' resources may be limited, but there is no limit to the music of the popular culture that flood their senses. Popular music can be fun and exciting, but it is the "dessert food" of the child's musical diet. My students' music education brings with it a wider variety of content to broaden their horizons, and take them on adventures to other places and times. Quality literature helps students make sense of their world, to explore emotions, to fuel their imaginations, allow them to dream, create, and reach beyond themselves. These books will allow students this invaluable experience.

Our school has a very nice library, where some schools in our district have very little.

However, there has never been an adequate Music section in our library. These books will help music to become a bigger part of the student's life. Students can borrow a folk song book, bring it home and sing the song to the family, making the child the teacher. The value of good literature is indeterminable. It spans past and present. It teaches students who they were, who they are, and who they can be.
