Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a sixth year teacher working on my first year trying flexible seating. I teach at a low-income/Title I school district, and my students face several challenges both in and out of the classroom. This year we were struck by Hurricane Harvey and our school was really not damaged, but the homes of many of my students were.
Despite the hardships they have faced, they are resilient and spirited learners making their way back.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able personally to solve the many challenges they face outside of school. However, I can certainly make a powerful impact on the eight hours they spend here at school every day.
My Project
We all know the struggle of review weeks and ways of making fun and engaging ways to review older concepts. Kids are extremely competitive and love trying to solve puzzles.
I want to create an escape room kit where my team and I can review previously covered material using a fun and innovative method.
Escape rooms are incredibly fun and addictive and I have seen classrooms create fun, engaging, student-centered activities around the escape room concept. It is usable in any subject or grade level so we could use it for just about anything. The various types of boxes, chests, and safes with different combination locks would all be used to create puzzle like reviews where students would have to think critically and collaboratively to work out the solution.
All of the various types of boxes and locks, as well as the Harry Potter game, would be used in my classroom to create themed escape rooms. They would use these supplies as well as the Rocketbook Wave notebook, and pens/UV pens to solve interactive and engaging riddles and create rigor in the classroom.
