In 2012 federal legislation began that requires English Language Learners who had been in the US for one year to take and pass grade level exams. Without access to books they can read and comprehend, we have no hope to teach students the skills and strategies they need to be successful!
Our students are 7th graders from various countries around the world.
We have a wide range of culturally and linguistically diverse students. Some have had a lot of experience with English, some have none; thus, their reading levels vary greatly.
All of these students have a bright spirit and a desire to succeed. They love to read, but the current Reading curriculum is set with grade-level materials, and with the variety of stages of English-learning, most of our students cannot read and understand the text.
These students are ardent in their desire to succeed in school and make this world a better place. Accessible text is just one step on this road for our class.
My Project
These books will help us to teach these students, but are also high interest and reflect experiences to which our students can relate. These books provide our students the platform to achieve the set standards! Since the books are easy to read and comprehend, their time is not spend trying to decode words. Their brains are freed up to do the thinking required of a rigorous Reading curriculum.
Imagine being thrown into a new culture with no friends, little family, and no language training.
Then, imagine being asked to take college Rhetoric and Composition in that language with no English support. You are capable of understanding the content, but the language makes it next to impossible for you to show what you know.
This is the reality that our students face EVERY day. Please help us give our students the opportunity to truly show what they know and realize their dreams.
