This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

According to our beloved Dr. Seuss: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." However, this can be a daunting task for many students who struggle with reading and who learn differently.

Our school is in a lower-income suburb in Texas.

We have a very diverse student body and many do not have the support at home to improve their reading skills. Many of the parents speak little or no English and are unable to help their children with reading at home. Other students struggle with learning or behavior difficulties that prevent them from learning using traditional methods.

My Project

My students need four individual CD players and listening center skill packs such as Multiple Meanings Listening Pack,Making Inferences Pack and Building Comprehension Pack, to use during independent reading center time. Starting the first day of school, I encourage my 2nd graders to be independent superstars. We work very hard on procedures and routines which allows them to work and learn independently. Using the Daily 5 framework (Boushey & Moser), students learn to Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Work on Words, and Listen to Reading. This time allows me to work with individuals or with small groups. One of the components, Listen to Reading, is very important for many of my students because when students are engaged in supported reading, they no longer have to labor over every word. Instead, they can read at a comfortable pace that allows them to acquire the information in the text. Because the printed material is recorded, students can not only read the assigned text, they can re-read it - something struggling readers generally do not get to do. The listening equipment and reading skill packs will benefit my students by allowing them to work and learn independently and successfully.

This project will not only prepare students for the high stakes testing that begins in 3rd grade, but it will also instill a love for reading and learning that will follow them throughout life.

Achieving success at an early age will create a lifelong desire for learning!
