Environmental Responsibility, Health and Literacy

My students need 40 copies of the book "The Omnivore's Dilemma for Kids: The Secrets Behind What You Eat" to become informed consumers who make healthy, responsible, environmentally-conscious choices.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Flaming-hot Cheetos. Dr. Pepper. A hamburger from the school cafeteria. What do these have in common? Yes, I watch my students eat them daily, but more importantly... they are all made from CORN.

My students are in 7th grade -- they are most interested in each other.

Many of my students come from low-income families. Every year their literacy skills are lower, their eating habits worse, and, as their science and health teacher, I feel compelled to do what I can to fix it.

My Project

I read Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and was fascinated by it. With so much relevant information, and a young reader's edition that is much more accessible to middle school students, I am convinced my students will be highly engaged in this book. My goal is to improve their literacy skills through a text that is relevant, scientific (MANY topics will be explored and tied into our science curriculum), and socially just. My students will learn about their food -- is it right that the government is subsidizing corn when it is used to make food devoid of nutrients? Just what is in a value meal at McDonald's? My students will read, think, question, analyze, and ultimately become informed decision makers. My students will read this book and use it as a starting point to deepen their understanding of science, learn new research skills/information literacy, and develop their reading comprehension.

I am passionate about teaching this book to my students.

Far too many people (myself included until recently) are ignorant about the food they eat, how it affects their health, and what CHOICES they have. There is nothing more socially just than being informed. Part of the students' learning will come from the book directly, other aspects will come from the discussions, research questions, science tie-ins, etc. that result from reading.
