This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Help students in our Makerspace learn computer-aided design and develop innovative products with a vinyl cutter!
Our Makerspace is a "STEAM Room," a space for students to maximize their creative genius.
Each project permits students to integrate their understanding of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in a project-based atmosphere. Rather than learning a concept first, and then demonstrating their understanding on a test, students in the Makerspace synthesize background knowledge and apply their artistic skills to learn and create. Working in the Makerspace fosters independent learning.
My Project
Students will have choice in their projects as they learn "Design Thinking." Example projects have included a prototype for a machine that requires sit-ups to gain Internet access, an invention to curb bullying, and even a low-cost underwater breathing apparatus. In all cases, the inventors would benefit from a vinyl cutter to enhance and brand their designs in a professional manner. Access to a vinyl cutter will teach students product marketing and computer design skills. When students have an authentic audience with whom to share their work, the quality and effort improve immensely. Thus, we will host a community event each semester for students to exhibit their projects. Having a vinyl cutter will allow students to develop professional-level branding for their ideas and inventions on display.
Marketing is a crucial component of entrepreneurship.
A vinyl cutter will help instill confidence in my students as they conquer the challenges necessary to think creatively, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes.
