The goal of our room is to make sure that all students are on a path to College and Career Readiness. All children are afforded opportunities to work with content that is matched to the Nevada Academic Content Standards. Students in our room have pledged to "Be Nice and Work Hard."
The students in our room have spent the year "making the invisible, visible." Our school is in Reno, NV where a third of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Our school is part of a county which is a minority-majority school district.
Students in our room spend every day working with rigorous and complex material. The morning is spent working on literacy skills and the afternoon on STEAM--Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Important dispositions are nurtured in our room with an emphasis on Nevada History, Energy, Earth Materials, the recitation of evidence from literary sources, and learning to construct viable argument in math. All students are expected to exemplify good citizenship and affirm the academic and social successes of their classroom peers.
My Project
We are unintentionally putting a ceiling on student learning by limiting their access to technology. The donated Chromebooks would allow students consistent access to the Internet, publishing documents and keyboarding. In fact, the Nevada standards explicitly state that by the end of 4th grade, a child should be able to "use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting."
I am a Google Certified Educator and I would create a rich environment to ensure authentic student learning was able to take place.
Students would also be able to flip their learning experiences via content available for free on the Internet. That is, when students needed to review a lesson, they could do that on a Chromebook. Similarly, they could blend learning experience and challenge themselves with individually tailored content.
We all want to ensure that student learning is not limited by budgets and access to technology.
Regretfully, that is what is happening. The donated Chromebooks would allow consistent access to tools that would put students on a trajectory to College and Career Readiness.
