My students need 10 copies of "Ghost Map," "American Plague," and "Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" to enhance Science literacy in our reading circles.
When was the last time you read a science book that you couldn't put down? Still thinking? When my English students hear that they will be reading about science, they groan. Help me get them interested by introducing them to some real page-turners!
My students attend a college preparatory school with a special focus on biotechnology.
We strive to provide a challenging and enriched science curriculum with a strong emphasis on technology and the interrelationships among scientific disciplines. The program of studies in science and math emphasizes the broad understanding of theory and the application to real world issues and provides students with opportunities to pursue authentic and meaningful hands-on research. Our English classrooms strive to integrate science into the curriculum to enhance student learning.
We have a large and diverse student population, and county funds are limited to the basic needs of our growing student population. Therefore, additional funding for special projects is severely limited. As an English teacher who teaches students in a biotechnology program, I would like to offer my students the chance to see how interesting science can be by reading literature that focuses on science in new and exciting ways
My Project
By donating ten copies of "The Ghost Map," "The American Plague," and "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," you are offering my students the opportunity to read about and discuss issues like cholera, Yellow Fever, and human cells in ways that are much different from what their textbooks offer. As they read each book, students will share what they have learned in reading circles, Socratic seminars, and classroom projects. They will be given the chance to understand these "boring" scientific topics in new and exciting ways.
Most of us have read that one book that we will always remember and recommend to friends.
Imagine seeing high school students interested in scientific literature and motivated to continue reading, sharing, and learning. If I can motivate my students to read AND learn about science, I have hit the jackpot!
