My students need copies of Divergent, Matched, and other books to encourage small group and independent reading and to connect YA novels with the classics
My tenth graders need to read. We read whole class novels, they have fun with Shakespeare, but they need current YA novels they can relate to and will also relate to our classics. Lit circles will encourage reading, collaboration, media usage, and writing skills to help with Common Core next year.
I have a variety of students.
My honors class could read college books, but I also have inclusion classes with many struggling readers. By offering book choices it will differentiate the reading levels without singling anyone out while still enabling them all to discuss character, theme, etc.
We are a small rural school and I have NO budget for new books. I've been able to encourage many to read by having a Book Nook in my room but I cannot afford to buy multiple copies of books.
My Project
Students will be in literature circles of 4-6 students and each student will get a book. They will read independently but discuss in their circles. There could be up to 5 different discussions going at any one time. All of the themes and skills will also relate to our whole class novel and will encourage students to synthesize across texts.
Students will also have projects such as wiki pages, writings, etc that tie in with their circle's book pick. I am asking for class sets of the novels Divergent, Between Shades of Gray, and Never Fall Down.
Donations will help make my students not only better reader but help them to enjoy reading more.
It will allow students to have more of a choice in what they read. It will help them to see they can read a book and enjoy it which can sometimes make all the difference in the world.
