Engaging Readers with Academic Graphic Novels

My students need nineteen graphic novels that illustrate essential science topics, historical events, or important biographies.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Graphic novels. Over the years, they've acquired a "bad rap." But you know what? Sometimes they're just right for the reluctant reader. The perfect way to entertain, engage, and acquire important knowledge.

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income area of Northern California.

We are considered a Title I school, as the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a very high percentage of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

My Project

As a child, it sometimes takes a bit of prodding in order to fully enjoy a subject, activity, or new event. At first, the task may seem daunting or unattainable. But after just a bit of practice and gentle encouragement, you see that there was nothing to fear after all! For many students, reading and understanding nonfiction texts is just such a battle. Having to read more carefully to interpret and analyze factual information can be a challenge. As a teacher, I have found that with this particular reading series (Graphic Library), I have to do far less prodding. Who doesn't want to read a "comic book"?

These graphic novels will provide my students with a great deal of factual data, presented in a way that engages the child they are.

They are fun, yet fully academic. By covering such detailed science topics, historical events, and important figures in an engaging way, my students can begin to see how great it is to read nonfiction text. Please help us start this reading snowball!
