Encouraging The Reluctant Reader Through Art

My students need art supplies and leveled readers to develop reading skills.

My Students

Encourage the reluctant readers! The books I'm reading to my students during read alouds seem as though they are not coming to life for some of my students!

I serve twenty-two, first grade students who live in the heart of the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.

They are bright, energetic, and extremely eager learners. They are at a very critical time in their life, the beginning stage of reading. Their focus should be on learning, rather than what they don't have or what they need.

My Project

I'm requesting a variety of titles to use as daily read alouds and art materials to aid in bringing the books to life for my reluctant readers. What better way to draw students into a difficult concept to learn, than through art. I want to be able to instill a love of and for reading in all my students. In order to make this happen, they need many opportunities for success, and this project will bring them closer to that goal. Each day I read a story to students (read aloud), and it is followed by an activity to build comprehension. These books will be used as the read alouds, and the art materials will be provided to students to illustrate the character, setting, plot, or theme. In addition, students will be able to reflect through drawing how the story made them feel or illustrate a specific area of the book. These activities will pull the reluctant reader in to the reading process. They will be having fun and learning at the same time.

First grade is a critical time for students to develop important reading skills to become life-long readers.

With these materials my student will develop the comprehension skills presented, and love the process. Give the gift of reading and be a part of making this project a reality for my students.
