Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The picture posted shows what our students use as goal posts when they play soccer at recess, lunch recess, and P.E. They use an orange cone and a tree as the posts. Yet, they still play every single day. Why? Because they love playing soccer. They look forward to playing it every single day.

My school is a K-5th elementary school located in Southern California.

It is located in a low-income Latino community. My students enjoy physical education and playing activities, but they especially enjoy playing soccer. This sport is very popular around the world, but also very popular in the Latino community. And no doubt, my students display this enthusiasm for soccer every day. There are so many competing distractions for our children's attention. Video games and endless channels to watch can lead to a sedentary lifestyle if they are not kept in check. No doubt soccer will keep them physically active and more involved in sports than sedentary activities.

My Project

The American Academy of Adolescent & Child Psychiatry notes that sports for children can facilitate friendships, social skills and self-esteem, as well as provide a vehicle to teach lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship. And sports for young children can simply be about fun, too. Children need an outlet for physical activity, and sports like soccer can help them burn energy. Children who play sports tend to perform better in school. Social benefits, such as mixing with others, having to work as a team, contributing through individual effort to a collective goal, experiencing the highs and lows, picking each other up, competition, striving to be the best, aiming to win and supporting and helping others are all by products of playing soccer. Many of the life skills that the players learn through soccer are beneficial in later life: how to form and build relationships, developing a sense of co-operation, how to lead people, and how to handle adversity.

I recently shared with my students that I would post a project on DonorsChoose to ask for two goals posts and I received a very happy and loud cheer and many smiles from my students.

I know that these new goal posts and soccer balls will bring joy and excitement as they will now feel like real soccer players with real soccer goal posts, instead of using a cone & a tree. Please know that by donating to this project you will make a large group of kids very, very happy.
