My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant and English-dominant students that spend half of the day learning in Spanish and half of the day learning in English.
We are in a school that has two different learning strands: Dual Language Immersion and English only instruction. We serve a very diverse population with over 60 percent of students living in poverty; almost all of the students in my class make up part of that 60 percent. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school population.
My Project
These resources will be used daily by all 5th grade students. Our team firmly believes that all students need to play. Our school has moved to a one recess school day in order to allow for more academic time, but what we found is that we were dealing with more behaviors because students couldn't move enough. Therefore, we have instituted an extra recess that can be earned. 5th graders that can show good behavior and get their work done, earn an extra recess in which they can go outside for an extra 15 minutes in the afternoon. The 5th grade recess pack will provide them with a variety of balls for team sports as well as equipment for individual play. The lockable cart will protect the equipment and ensure that these balls are available to them on a daily basis. These resources will give them balls and other playground equipment that they can use during their extra recess since the school equipment is unavailable to them at that time.
This project is important because it provides students with sports equipment to use during their extra recess.
The 5th grade recess pack adds to the motivation for them to do well during the day so that they can earn their extra recess.
