Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Can you imagine entering a new country and wanting to quickly learn the new language so that you can connect with your new friends? What if you really wanted to read with your new buddy and had no books that could engage both of you? Well, my students are truly looking for that "magical moment"!

My students consist of new arrivals from several different countries like Ecuador, Guatemala, Spain, and the Dominican Republic.

They are between seven and nine years old. The students have never been exposed to the English language and often lack literacy experiences in their own language. My school is an inner city school which is located in Westchester County, New York. We are surrounded by middle and upper class neighborhood schools which are afforded greater resources. We lack the technology resources and the students begin school without the necessary vocabulary and background knowledge. My students dream of having the opportunity to expand their vocabulary and background knowledge through the use of bilingual texts.

My Project

The students will have many opportunities. For example, they will be able to read with their peers, regardless of language barriers. The texts will be used to teach the necessary skills to becoming a good reader like identifying narrative elements and distinguishing between fact and opinion. I envision the students taking the books home and sharing them with their family members. This will help strengthen the home school connection and further develop the parents' language skills, as well as their own skills.

Donations to this project will make a dream become a true reality for children who would otherwise not have this educational opportunity.

These students come from poverty and lack the necessary resources to support their learning experiences. However, they do not take anything for granted and greatly appreciate the smallest gifts. So,this project will allow the students to develop their self esteem and feed their hunger for knowledge. In addition, they will build upon their native language.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
