This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in a low-income district. There isn't enough materials to adequately meet our students needs. They have special needs, most with emotional disorders. My students work very hard to become successful in all areas of the curriculum.

I work in a pre-K to first grade classroom.

My students need lots of nurturing, guidance and structure to learn even the basic of social or academic skill. Our school is a small, special needs school servicing students from Pre-K through 12th grade. It is in a low-income setting with many students coming from single or foster parent families.

My Project

I am requesting materials to replace the current listening center equipment that is no longer working. A working listening center would allow my emerging readers to listen to a story on tape or CD to help them in acquiring new vocabulary and sight words, to hear stories read with inflection in the readers voice, and allow them to be independent while at the listening center. I am requesting the CDs to aid in the letter/sound acquisition of my pre-K students. They respond well to music and tend to stay focused when music is part of the curriculum.

The listening center equipment will also be used to play music when we do our group movement activities.

This is one activity the students really thrive in and feel successful in. Other areas of the curriculum are so hard for my students to master, but music is the universal language that knows no boundaries and can reach students of all abilities. Without a working system, my students really miss hearing stories, doing music activities during our day. They really want it back in the room.
