Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is unique because it is a combined class of bilingual and monolingual students. Even though I co-teach to save space in the building, I'm happy to work alongside my co-teacher. Our class is filled to the brim this year with 50 students, and we are excited and ready for this challenge!
My school is an inner-city public school, where all students receive a free lunch.
They are motivated students, despite the fact that many of them deal with issues at home, such as low-income, that make their days quite difficult. This year, my co-teacher and I decided to minimize the supplies purchased by our students families in order to lessen their burden. Unfortunately, this meant taking off many items that we use for art class. My second graders love being able to create something wonderful of their own, but our school does not have funding for an art program. We have taken it upon ourselves to have at least one specified art class a week, so that our students can fully express themselves through art. In order to continue our art class this year, we have to find other ways to purchase art supplies. Whether we use our own money or receive help from you, we want our student to have the same experience others may have at schools with actual art programs.
My Project
Each week, we will have art in the classroom. My students need art supplies, including crayons, brushes, colored pencils and art smocks for use when painting. Students will use the resources to create works of art. Projects will allow students to explore multiple media, ranging from colored pencil to paints and more. All art projects will be displayed in the classroom using the clothesline, so that students can feel proud of their displayed works of art. With the increasing demands of standardized testing and other necessary curriculum, little time is left to let students explore their creativity throughout the day. These resources will allow students to have art in the classroom, giving them a chance to be creative and express themselves. They will be able to develop art skills that they would receive if our school had an art program.
Your donation will make my students second grade year more memorable.
Kids love sharing their works of art with family and friends, and these supplies will give them the opportunity to do so. This small gesture will also help a class of 50 second grade students relieve stress from demands of testing that increase every school year.
