Drumming Up the Fun! - 1 Tubano for Classroom

My students need one large tubano for our new world drumming curriculum so that more students can participate at one time.

My Students

Visit my classroom and you will see children who really love music. Some love singing. Others love playing in the band. Overall, the number one activity that sparks all interests has been world drumming. Through my Donors Choose Project, I want to allow more students a chance to play during class.

I teach in a high poverty area in rural Maine where multicultural experiences are greatly needed to help prepare students for a 21st century world.

Field trips to see shows of various interests do not happen very often, so my hope is to bring more music from Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America to their ears.

My Project

Getting a new tubano will allow more students a chance to participate at one time, and when I teach 20-25 students in one class, every drum counts. Within the new curriculum that I will be implementing, there are seven units of study spanning a variety of music from the aforementioned regions of the world. I will also lecture on culture, style, and musical elements, but the hands on experience will be paramount to their overall learning.

I want to build the program, but don't expect a lot at one time.

This is a slow process that will require love and dedication to the kids and music education. I will feel accomplished if I can complete this project by the end of the summer so that I can give my kids more opportunities to love music.
