My students need a basketball goal, balls and accessories to work on team building, crossing the midline, working together on basketball skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The STEM school is where I teach a very diverse group of kids. Many of these kids come from homes where education doesn't play an important role. These students have not had experiences that help their academic career. They are in need of activities that promote crossing the mid line to aid in developing better handwriting and reading skills. They need to learn taking turns, being part of a team to accomplish a goal and other social skills. Playing as a basketball team helps with this.
Team building and sports help students academic future.
The entire school receives free lunch and many families live below the poverty line. These students need all the hands-on activities they can to help them retain what they are being taught. With so many of the students being tactile learners and having dyslexic tendencies, they need activities that they can see and touch. By creating a fun way to promote crossing the mid-line which will help with hand writing and reading skills they don't realize they are working on social and reading skills when polishing their basketball skills.
While at recess, if they have access to equipment that will help them with developing team building skills, crossing the mid-line they are making connections in their brain that will help them read and write better. This basketball and basketball hoop will not only help develop students sports skills to help their school basketball team it will also help students develop a team attitude with their peers learning skills to aid in their academic development. Using the red and yellow pinnies to designate which team a student is on will help students be better connected with their teammates.
The items in this project will help by providing a way to fill many of the gaps in their learning process.
This area is very poor with 39% of the households living below the poverty line. By providing these things these students as well as others will improve their image of self and their academic future. Please help make a difference in a child's life.
