My Students

Nature is an amazing classroom. My students want to bring all of its vivid color, its kelp forests teeming with life, and its weird and wild adaptations home with them to remember and enhance the concepts they learn in class. That hasn't been completely possible, yet.

My students are an amazing group of kids.

They are clever, hard working, eager to learn, kind, creative and full of questions. They range the gamut in ability and classification; gifted to working below grade level, students with IEPs, students who struggle with English, and students who struggle with behavior. Many of my students do have privileged home lives, but their school is small, crowded, and technologically out of date. Academic rigor is embedded in all we do, but the emphasis is on reaching the whole child, using different modalities, and bringing concepts alive with art, experimentation, and hands-on activities.

My Project

These waterproof digital cameras will allow my students to take the excitement of their ocean adventure directly to the classroom. The students will use the photos they take and the movies they film to enhance their study of science (ecosystems and food webs), literature (Island of the Blue Dolphins), and social studies (California history and geography). Their ability to document their experiences will bring about a greater connection to and understanding of the 4th grade curriculum.

Our school may be in a privileged area, but it receives very little in the way of funding.

Most of the programs that we offer and supplies we have are directly attributed to active fund raising. These cameras would not be available to us without your donations and will be used for many years. It is important that in this time of pervasive technology, that we are able to stay relevant and give the students an education fit for the 21st century while instilling them with a respect for nature.
