Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember sitting in your middle school classroom, hearing what the teacher was saying, but not understanding everything that was said? As visual learners, many of my students face this problem every day.
My 7th grade students come from a low-income area in southern California.
Our school (part of a series of charter schools that focus on college-readiness) is comprised of mostly Hispanic and African-American students. The majority of my students are either first-generation Americans or have recently come to this country with their families. For many of my students, English is not their first language. Some of my students have learning disabilities, and they primarily struggle with auditory processing and attention. Because of their disabilities, my students have to work extremely hard in order grasp the material in their classes. However my students are constantly trying to improve their skills in math, reading and writing, so they can attend college in the future.
My Project
Many of my students struggle to retain information when it is presented orally, so they need a clear visual representation of notes and assignments. By projecting the student worksheets on the board, a document camera will allow me to provide my students with a visual reference they sorely need in order to process the material.
Moreover, not only will this reduce their confusion and frustration, but it will help me to effectively model how to take notes and complete specific documents. These are essential skills that my students will need to be successful in life, and a document camera will allow me to instruct them in a way that is tailored to their needs.
A document camera will be a vital tool for my visual learning students to grasp the material in a way that suits their needs.
This resource will significantly reduce the frustration they consistently feel in the classroom, and it will give them the confidence they need to continue working hard despite the extra barriers they face.
