Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your middle school English class? Sharing work is often the most exciting part. With a document camera I can easily project students' writing so that they can show others what they have done.
I teach 85 amazing 6th graders at a dual language middle school in the Bronx.
Our mission is to develop academic excellence in both English and Spanish. Seventy percent of my students are current or former English Language Learners. Some of my students have been in this country less than 6 months. A quarter of my students have learning disabilities. And yet, my students come to school at 7am every morning, happy and excited to learn. They enjoy classes that encourage teamwork and project based learning. They also support one another as they learn to speak, read, and write in two languages.
My Project
A document camera allows students to present work from their notebook quickly, rather than recopy it. It also easily allows teachers to model how to complete graphic organizers and annotate readings. My English learners greatly benefit from seeing models and a document camera will help me easily provide these examples for them!
A document camera will give my 6th graders more opportunities to share their work and look at the exemplary work of their peers.
Improving their reading and writing skills will help my students succeed in 6th grade and beyond. This will help them build confidence and understanding as they grow and develop as bilingual scholars and leaders!
