DNA: Future Generation's Identification?

My students need 4 DNA electrophoresis kits so they can understand how DNA is used to identify not just suspects in a crime, but everyone.

My Students

Do you remember the first time that you heard about DNA being used to convict a suspect in a crime? It sounded like fantasy but DNA "fingerprinting" is one of the most reliable technologies to identify perpetrators of a crime.

Most of my students are seniors in high school.

They live in a large metropolitan area where the most shocking or dramatic story on the news is usually about some type of crime. Some of them have chosen to take my Forensic Science course because they are interested in how suspects are caught and convicted. Also,my students are fascinated with DNA "fingerprinting" and want to understand how this DNA identification is done.

My Project

With the DNA electrophoresis activity, my students will understand how DNA technology has changed the way we identify suspects of crimes and also how we identify ourselves. DNA "fingerprinting" could become the future social security card or state id and students of today need to understand what that would involve.

This project would allow students the opportunity to think about how, when, and why DNA "fingerprinting" should be used in their future.

The students of today are the voters and decision makers of tomorrow and the better informed they are, the better decisions they will make.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
