Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My special education students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are eager to please and to work hard. But from the moment the bell rings, they struggle. Academics do not come easy for my students. Many struggle in all areas: reading, writing, and math. They fall farther and farther behind their peers and their confidence dwindles. Although there are many possible reasons for this, one cause is clear.
The challenge is poverty.
My special needs students attend an elementary school that has the most students in poverty as well as the most English Language Learners district wide. We are a Title I school where greater than 80% of our students receive free lunch. Our school has some of the greatest teachers in the district, but our test scores show that our students are still below district and state averages. Furthermore, our school has a low graduation rate and studies show that the risk of dropping out of high school starts in elementary. As teachers, we want the very best for our students, but we are faced with heavy challenges.
My Project
In many of today's schools, class sizes are increasing while the number of classrooms remain the same. My school and classroom are no exception. Myself and another special education teacher, along with several groups of special needs students, have to share one classroom. That means one group of students may be focusing on a lesson, while another group of students are trying to take a test - all in the same room! Can you imagine how hard it would be to concentrate on a test while other students in the room are actively engaged in a lesson? Or how visually distracting it would be while one group of students does a fun math activity while the other group needs to focus on an assignment? My students have ADHD, auditory processing difficulties, and learning disabilities, which makes it even more difficult for them to concentrate in a shared classroom!
With these classroom dividers, my special needs students will be able to better concentrate and focus on learning.
The dividers will help the groups of students to be able to complete their assignments in the shared classroom. The dividers will help reduce the amount of visual and auditory stimuli that would otherwise distract the students. In addition, the dividers are a calming blue, which will help create an optimal learning environment with reduced student behaviors.
With large class sizes and a limited number of classrooms, my special needs students have no choice but to share a room with another group of students. However, with your help, my students will have the dividers they need to make their crowded classroom more successful.
