Dissection Specimens For Human Anatomy And Physiology
My students need 35 rats, 35 sheep hearts and half brains to dissect in Human Anatomy & Physiology. These specimen will be shared between two classes of 11th and 12th grader.
Help my students and me truly experience anatomy and physiology through dissections of actual specimens. Virtual dissections are good but nothing beats the real specimen.
My students are 11th and 12th graders who live in the largest city in WI.
Many are mature beyond their years with all the difficult life experiences and loses they have endured. They are very excited to dissect, few are grossed out. They are excited to be challenged and look forward to the learning experiences.
The two classes are filled with students of a variety of ethnicity. There is 30-35 students in each class. The high school is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) school, a comprehensive high school with a large special education population of students.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to dissect and study anatomy, most similar to human anatomy, of sheep hearts and brains, and rats. Many students do not know the anatomy of their own bodies, so the specimen will give them an interesting opportunity to experience the internal environment of similar mammals. I will never forget my opportunity to dissect and study the anatomy of a fetal pig. The specimen will teach internal anatomy and the interrelatedness among the organ systems.
My students have limited opportunities in so many aspects of their lives.
I want these two classes of Human Anatomy and Physiology to have opportunities equal to that of students in suburban schools. We are frustrated with the inequality.
