Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember being in elementary school and bringing home your first sculpture project? I remember mind was a paper mache mask, that my mom still has to this day! My students do not have the resources needed to get to experience making three-dimensional artwork. Be the one to make that change.
My students attend an urban school in Florida.
Most of my students are on free and/or reduced lunch. They are hungry for new experiences, and very appreciative for any resources they receive. Most have little knowledge of the world outside of their neighborhood, but are interested in learning about other places, people, and ways of living.
My Project
My students love hands on experiences. In art, we learn about the elements of art and principles of design by doing. Form is a concept best taught by creating something three dimensional. I want my students to be able to see and touch what I mean when I say three dimensional or holds volume. Creating beautiful sculptures out of yarn and string will be a memorable way for them to learn the concept and have something they can take home as a reminder of the lesson and their time in elementary school. The students will begin by choosing a balloon. Then, wrapping it in yarn and string. Next they will cover it with a layer of Mod Podge. Once dry they will pop the balloon and have the remaining sculpture. These sculptures can be free standing, or hung from the ceiling. Need a visual??? Follow the link below!
What kid wouldn't be ecstatic bringing that home?
Students love creating art, but ideas and inspiration gets stale when drawing and painting are their main forms of expression.
Help students to see how ordinary items, like balloon, yarn, string, and glue, can be turned into a unique sculpture!
