Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Two years ago, I had the privilege of developing a brand new art program at our elementary school. My students have grown into confident young artists who are always excited to explore new ideas and materials. This coming year, we are ready to embrace new artistic challenges together!
My students are a diverse group of learners who come from a wide variety of vibrant cultures.
We are a neighborhood school with a strong Spanish Immersion program. About 75% of our students spend time learning in two languages. Even my art room is bilingual! Our school is also a Title I school, with almost all students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. As a school community, we strive to surround our kids with the services and opportunities they need to become confident, caring and successful members of society.
My Project
I integrate all of my art lessons with content in the general education classroom. Often, this means I am connecting art with science, allowing students to visually explore scientific concepts in the world around us. A set of digital cameras will allow us to bring the outdoors into the classroom. For example, we might head outside to our school's garden, take pictures of animal habitats and then use our photos as backgrounds for animal illustrations. Younger students might use the cameras to find lines and shapes in nature and then practice those same concepts back in the art room. A class set of digital cameras would give my students a powerful tool for visually investigating our world.
Our kids are growing up in a fast paced, technology driven society.
However, a set of digital cameras would allow my students to slow down and use technology to examine and investigate the wonders that surround us. Digital cameras will provide an opportunity for our art studio to expand beyond the classroom walls and out into our community.
