Differentiated Math for the Third Grade Mathematicians
My students need binders for differentiated math work that is perfect for their level as well as a shelf where they can keep their binders and math manipulatives.
I teach a Dual Language Immersion class in an urban school district. My students are an energetic group of Spanish-dominant students who spend 60% of the day learning in Spanish and 40% of the day learning in English.
My energetic, bilingual students are always ready to learn and take on a challenge.
The majority of the students in my class have been in a cohort together since Kindergarten. They are a very close knit and supportive group! We serve a very diverse population in that over 60% of our schools' students are living in poverty. Some of the students in my classroom contribute to that 60%. We are also unique in that minority cultures make up the majority of our school's population.
My Project
Without differentiation in math class, half of the material goes over students' heads and is not comprehended, or it is not nearly challenging enough. Only a small percent of the class is benefiting from the lesson being taught and the homework given. With these materials, the students will be able to be exposed to our daily lesson/task, will be able to try that task on, but then be able to go to their differentiated binder to practice math at a level that is perfect for their needs and necessary for their growth in mathematics. With the shelf, students will be able to organize their materials and have their math manipulatives all in one place.
This project will most definitely make an impact on my students in different ways.
It will allow the students to come to math class with more of a positive attitude and leave with that same attitude rather than feeling defeated and negative. It will also give my students the opportunity to make more growth and achieve more success due to the fact that they are focusing on a level appropriate for their development rather than jumping ahead and skipping necessary concepts and knowledge.
