Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of the most challenging tasks for elementary students presents itself in the area of writing. Students need to listen to, talk about, and read examples of good writing in order develop as young writers. This collection of books was chosen specifically to highlight various strategies taught.

Ninety percent of the students in our school receive free or reduced price lunch.

Seventy-five percent of our school's population are English Language Learners. Students are being asked to write daily in class, and teachers are hungry for ways to model good writing for them.

My Project

By being able to model good writing, students will be able to more clearly capture what their teacher's are asking them to do. Exposure to literature in it's many forms and writing daily in many different content areas have both been proven to help develop as young writers. My students need trade books such as Fables, Casey at the Bat, Everybody Needs A Rock, and Chicken Sunday as well as many other classic picture books.These books will provide excellent models of story writing for my current and future classes.

The ability to express oneself is critical to academic growth.

If student's can develop as young writers in elementary school, the obstacles they face in middle and high school will be less severe.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
