Developing Good Habits of Reading

My Students

I am fortunate to work with the most amazing students and families. My students are curious, eager and ready to meet the challenges of third grade. They come to school excited to learn and explore every day. They have such huge appetites for knowledge and I have limited resources.

When we hear about 21st Century skills for students we automatically think of technology skills, but the 21st Century student needs more than technology skills.

They need the ability to think critically, reason and consider the ideas and opinions of others. One way to help them acquire those skills is to expose them to a wide variety of books that expose them to experiences and ideas different from their own. My students come from a variety of backgrounds from ethnicity to socioeconomic status. They have a wide variety of interests and reading levels. As we implement the new Common Core Standards and the emphasis on non-fiction texts we find that our classroom and school library is lacking the resources we need to make this transition. My students need a classroom library that will excite and inspire them. A classroom library will allow my students to be successful in school. We also need bookcases and bins to store our books.

My Project

A vibrant classroom library will give my students the opportunity to expand and explore their knowledge and interests. They will have the resources to research our topics in greater depth while practicing reading fluency skills. A classroom library will help my students master the new Common Core Standards and meet the challenge of academic rigor and critical thinking skills. A classroom library will allow my students an opportunity to understand literature through multiple perspectives and opinions and teaches them to listen and consider the ideas of others.

My students read their library books in two days.

With your help my students will be able to find a book of interest to them every time they go to the book shelf. With your help my students will continue to create a habit and love of reading. My students will be able to learn from reading and take that knowledge beyond their book to their other studies.
