Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an ESL resource teacher who travels to different classrooms to provide ESL instruction to my students. I would like my students to increase their English language proficiency levels each year. It is a challenge to keep my students engaged within the already busy classroom.
Our school is located in a high poverty area.
Many of our students do not have the things they need to be successful in school including technology. My students come to me with various levels of English language proficiency and knowledge; however, the majority of my students are willing to learn. They enjoy participating in activities that are hands-on and keep them actively engaged.
My Project
I am requesting one iPad to download an app called Sight Words. This app will allow my students to practice identifying sight words they are learning in the classroom. I will be able to create online flash cards for my students to practice these words. I will also be able to record myself reading the words to assist students who have difficulty identifying the sight words.
Another app I plan to use is Starfall. The Starfall app provides my students practice with decoding words. I can incorporate interactive activities for the week's phonics pattern into my lessons for each grade level. My students will be able to sing songs, build words, and play educational games.
The use of an iPad will be very beneficial to my students. My students lack the prerequisite skills that many other students their age already have developed. By using an iPad my students will have the opportunity to develop those skills and increase their English language proficiency levels.
Most of my students come to school lacking the background knowledge required to comprehend our existing reading curriculum.
I would use the iPad to build their background knowledge on the topics they will encounter during reading instruction. I would show videos and pictures to build the background knowledge about these topics. The increased background knowledge will assist them in better comprehending the reading material.
My students also lack vocabulary. My English language learners do not have sufficient vocabulary to express themselves orally or in writing. My students come from countries where English is not spoken. Also, my students live in an environment that is not vocabulary rich. Therefore, they start school behind their peers in the number of vocabulary words they know. I would use an iPad to provide visuals and activities to expand my students’ basic vocabulary. I would also use visuals and activities to explain the vocabulary they will encounter.
